    ADVISORY BOARD CHAIRMAN AND FOUNDER - BLOOMBERG NEW ENERGY FINANCE

    Michael Liebreich is the Founder and Chairman of the Advisory Board of Bloomberg New Energy Finance, the world’s leading provider of research for senior decision-makers in clean energy, carbon and power markets, advanced transportation, energy technology and natural gas. Since August 2012 Michael has also served as a Board Member of Transport for London, the capital’s transport authority.

    Michael founded New Energy Finance in 2004 and acted as Chairman and Chief Executive before selling it to Bloomberg LP in 2009. Bloomberg New Energy Finance is headquartered in London and now has over 200 staff working out of 13 offices around the world.

    He serves on the high-level Advisory Group for the UN Secretary General’s Sustainable Energy for All initiative and is Founder and Chairman of Finance for Resilience (FiRe), EcoVillages and the Liebreich Foundation. He chairs the selection committee for the Bloomberg New Energy Pioneers, which are announced each year at the Bloomberg New Energy Finance Summit, and is a Visiting Professor at the Imperial College Energy Futures Lab.
    Michael has in the past served on the advisory board of the Clinton Global Initiative‘s Energy and Climate Change working group and on the selection panels for the Zayed Future Energy Prize and the the World Economic Forum Technology Pioneers. He was a long-time member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Councils for Sustainable Energy and the New Energy Architecture, among other things helping launch the initiative which led to the current WTO Environmental Goods Agreement negotiations. Michael was a founding Board Member of the Middle East Clean Energy Business Council, a member of the Accenture Energy Board and a member of the advisory panel for the INSEAD Energy Club.

    Michael is a prolific technology angel investor, and acts as Chairman of technology startup Pearlshare. He is also Chairman of St. Mark’s Hospital Foundation, a charity supporting research and teaching in colorectal medicine at St Mark’s Hospital, part of London North West Healthcare NHS. He is a three-time finalist in the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards, and in June 2015 was presented with the Renewable Energy Association’s Judges Award for his outstanding contribution to the development of renewable energy. Michael is also a member of the Advisory Council of Business for Britain.

    Prior to founding New Energy Finance, Michael was an entrepreneur, venture capitalist and media executive. In the 1990s he acted as Deputy Managing Director of Associated Press Television and Founding Director of Sports News Television, then as UK Managing Director of Groupe Arnault’s technology investment activities. He also spent five years in the London office of McKinsey & Company.

    Michael graduated in Engineering from the University of Cambridge with first class honours, winning the Ricardo Prize for Thermodynamics and the Christ’s College Wyatt Prize. He earned his MBA from Harvard, where he was a Harkness Fellow and Baker Scholar. He was a member of the British Ski Team from 1986 to 1993, competing in two World Championships and the 1992 Albertville Olympic Games.

    An accomplished author, Peter's two best-selling books, A Thousand Barrels a Second (McGraw-Hill, NY 2005) and The End of Energy Obesity (John Wiley & Sons, NY 2009) provide insight into the dynamic world of energy transitions through a thoughtful and highly readable examination of economic, environmental and geopolitical pressures. His books have been translated into several languages including, Chinese, Japanese and Arabic.

    Peter’s career began as a geophysicist in 1982, and then moved from oil and gas to the finance and economics sector in 1990. This background combined with his entrepreneurial spirit, helped him rise from the trenches of hands-on oil exploration fieldwork to become an internationally recognized expert in energy matters. Peter publishes ARC Energy Charts, a weekly journal of real-time business indicators, and writes a weekly column for Canada’s National Newspaper, The Financial Post.

    A collector of energy antiques and antiquarian books, Peter's passion is studying how society evolves its energy use, and applying the lessons of the past into today's strategic business issues. His collective knowledge and experience in geophysics, innovation, history and economics allows him to give audiences thought provoking insights into today’s pressing energy issues.

    Peter has an undergraduate degree in Geophysics from the University of Alberta, a graduate degree in Econometrics from the University of Southampton UK, and a Master of Science in Management of Technology from the Sloan School of Management at MIT. In addition to his principal role at ARC Financial, he is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Calgary and has lectured at many leading universities and conferences around the world.

    Since 1.5.2014 Dr. Kai Grassie heads the division “Corporate Innovation” within the Bosch Home Appliances Group (BSH). In this function he is responsible for radical innovation and pacing technologies, as well as all patent activities within the BSH group.

    In his previous position, Dr. Grassie worked from January 2006 to May 2014 for Giesecke & Devrient. There he headed the Division “New Business” as general manager until he became CTO for G&D from January 2011 onward.

    Before his time with G&D, Dr. Grassie held several management positions within the Dutch Royal Philips Electronics Group. He started his career there in 1989 within Philips Research, moved on to Philips Lighting and Philips Components before he changed to Philips Semiconductors in 2002. There he was VP for “Technology and Innovation” in the Business Unit “Identification”. From 2003 until his change to Giesecke & Devrient, Dr. Grassie was CEO of “Philips Semiconductors Dresden AG”.

    Dr. Grassie studied Physics in Dortmund and has a PhD in Theoretical Physics. Until 1989, Dr. Grassie was scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Plasmaphysics in Garching/Munich.

    Sam has worked in the energy industry for 20 years across a number of technical and commercial roles. Before joining HEM, Sam was one of the founding members of RWE’s Principal Investment team within RWE Supply and Trading. Prior to PI, Sam was Head of Carbon Credit Purchasing for RWE Power’s Climate Protection Team. Climate Protection both developed, financed and operated carbon reduction projects under the framework of the Kyoto Protocol and bought primary and secondary carbon certificates. Sam started his career with National Power (NP) within the Fuel Management Team responsible for all fuel related issues for NP’s IPP portfolio.

    Gareth Burns is an Irish citizen and has 20 years industry experience. He is a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries and has a BSc in Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics from Heriot-Watt University in the UK. Gareth started his career in the oil and gas industry in Statoil’s downstream activities in Ireland before transferring to the upstream operations in the UK. He has worked in all areas of the industry value chain and has held various management positions since 2006. He has been senior vice president in business development activities since January 2011 and as of 1st September 2015 is leading the Ventures team within New Energy Solutions, a recently established business area in Statoil that will drive profitable growth in renewable energy and other low-carbon energy solutions.

    Jeremy Wiles works as Solution Manager for the Siemens Hybrid Power Solutions within the Power and Gas division of Siemens AG, in Erlangen, Germany. He is responsible for developing the concept for large scale hybrid solutions, where significant wind and/or photovoltaic parks are integrated with diesel generator and storage systems to lower the overall cost of energy production. The group’s focus is to provide customers with a commercially optimized hybrid solution for larger systems on islands, mines and other remote industries or communities. In addition to supporting development of customer projects, Jeremy is involved with research projects for system dimensioning and optimization, automation and monitoring, camera based algorithms for short term cloud coverage prediction, modelling of storage, and simulation of power converters and grid components for grid control.

    Jeremy is from New Zealand and studied Electrical Engineering at Canterbury University, Christchurch (NZ). He worked for five years as an engineer in the local paper industry before leaving to “discover the world”. In Germany he took a position with Siemens as a commissioning engineer on industrial automation and drive applications. He has now been working at Siemens headquarters for ten years, and for the last five years has he focused on storage and diesel-hybrid systems. Here he is able to pursue his passion for rock climbing and enjoy the close proximity of different countries within Europe.

    Cheryl Benini is responsible for developing and managing Strategic Alliances at Siemens Building Technologies Division, the world market leader for safe, energy efficient and environmentally friendly buildings and infrastructure, headquartered in Zug, Switzerland. Her focus is on evaluating and creating alliances with IT companies, in particular. In addition, she is leading the division’s digitalization strategy development.

    Cheryl began her career in the automotive industry in 1988, working for 2 automotive manufacturers and a supplier before joining Siemens in 1997. At Siemens, she began in the Siemens Nixdorf IT division, divesting the computer business via a joint venture with Fujitsu. In the Building Technologies Division the past 15 years, she led the Strategy and Mergers & Acquisitions team for many years. Subsequent work in Portfolio Management for the Industry Sector included evaluating acquisition and divestment proposals and developing investment strategies with the Siemens corporate venture capital unit for the Sector and the Building Technologies division.

    Cheryl has a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from the University of Michigan, a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a Master of Science in Management, both from MIT (Leaders for Global Operations program).

    Mr. YU Honghui, born in 1968, has an educational background in machenical engineering and hold a MBA degree in Peking University.

    He started his career from iron & steel industry in the Design & Research Institute of Beijing Shougang Group as a designer. Then he worked in National Bureau of Statistics for three years, from HR officer, to the secretary of Youth League Committee of the special organization directly under the Bureau.

    In 1998, Mr Yu joined in China Energy Conservation Investment Corporation (CECIC, predecessor of CECEP) as director of auditing department, director of HR department and then Chairman of the Board of Beijing Huaming Electric Light Source Industry Co., Ltd., which was one of CECIC’s subsidiaries. A few years later, he was promoted to the assistant to general manager of CECIC, and the Chairman of the Board in CECIC’s regional subsidiary in Zhejiang province as well (now named as CECEP Industry Investment Co., Ltd.). After that, he was appointed as the vice president of CECIC.

    In 2010, CECIC merged with China New Era Group Corporation (another State-owned enterprise in China), then the company was renamed as China Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection Group (CECEP). After 5 years of restructuring and expansion, CECEP has become the flagship industrial group in energy saving and enviornmental proection industry in China. At present, Mr. Yu is the vice president of CECEP.

    Susan Kish is currently the Executive-in-Residence at Excel Venture Management in Boston. Most recently, Susan established the Cross Platform Initiatives team at Bloomberg LP. She was responsible for a portfolio of mandates to innovate and integrate across the media, data and analytical platforms. Projects included launching the first data-driven integrated media franchise, the Year Ahead, and incubating Bloomberg’s award-winning data visualization team.

    Susan joined Bloomberg through their acquisition of New Energy Finance (BNEF), where she was Director of Knowledge Services, leading strategic marketing programs. She initiated the BNEF Future of Energy Summit in 2008, which she continues to moderate for Bloomberg.

    Prior to Bloomberg and BNEF, Susan was an entrepreneur, founding First Tuesday Zurich in 1999. The business think tank connected start-ups and investors, convened and supported thought leader networks in sustainable energy, data security, emerging technologies, and private banking. After First Tuesday Zurich was acquired in 2006 by the professional online network XING, she established XING’s consulting and advisory business.

    Susan started her career as a banker at UBS and Chase. At UBS, she built credit businesses in the commodity, brokerage and municipal finance sectors before moving from New York to Zurich as Global Functional Head of Structured Finance, and as a member of the Global Credit Risk Committee.

    She is active as a board member and advisor, including to the Energy Venture Forum, the Foundation Center, InsideClimate News and SwissNex, the science innovative consulate programme. Susan graduated from Harvard with honours in History of Science, and lives with her family outside Boston, US.
